A manual winding machine or a powered winding machine: which is the best choice?

A manual winding machine or a powered winding machine: which is the best choice?
Cable winding machines come in various models. When you decide to acquire a cable winding machine, one of the most important choices you must make is the choice between a manual winding machine and an electrically driven machine. But how do you decide? The choice of a manual winding machine or an electrically driven winding machine primarily depends on three factors:
  • Length of the cables used.
  • Weight of the cables used.
  • Quantity of cables to be rolled up.
Naturally, the available budget also plays a role. An electrically driven machine requires an investment – as you probably already expected – that is considerably higher than the investment in a manual winding machine. Start the winding machines selection tool

Cable length

For relatively short cables – starting at 10 m in length – a manual winding machine generally is a perfect solution. Provided that the cable's diameter is not too large. When you acquire a manual winding machine you have the choice of a mobile manual winding machine (capable of accommodating cables up to a maximum of 200 kg) or a mobile winding table. A winding table by default is equipped with a length measuring device. This device is optional for a manual winding machine. A cable cutter is optional for a winding table. For longer cables, an electrically driven winding machine is ideal. The cable's weight often plays a role here as well.

Heavy cables

For heavy, often long, cables – with a large diameter or made of heavy material – using a manual winding machine often is not feasible. In that case, an electrically driven winding machine is the ideal and often only solution. Drums can easily be placed on the machine, often with a forklift truck. The winding process is automatic and requires little or no manual effort on the part of the operator.

Frequent use

Finally, the quantity of cables that need to be rolled up is also a determining factor in the choice of a manual winding machine or an electrically driven winding machine. If you need to roll up several cables every day, then the automatic machine quickly becomes an interesting option. The work and time savings are enormous and that makes the investment profitable. If a winding machine is only used several times per week or per month, then a manual winding machine most likely is the best option. Provided, of course, that the cables are not too long or too heavy.

Mobile or fixed

A manual winding machine is always mobile, that is, relocatable. For electrically driven machines there are two versions: mobile or fixed. Small electrical machines in principle are mobile and are easy to move. Large machines – capable of handling large drums – are of such size that they are difficult to move. These are often located at a fixed spot in the warehouse, preferably near stocked drums, and easily accessible to forklift trucks.
